For the week of January 4, 2021 Restoration of Our Spiritual Sight

If you’ve ever struggled to walk in the dark but kept stumbling because you couldn’t see, you know how frustrating that can be. Now imagine trying to comprehend what someone is teaching you, but not being able to see the big picture. Physical blindness is debilitating; however, spiritual blindness is tragic. Spiritual blindness affects the whole world; the only cure for it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

God’s message of love and forgiveness is simple and straightforward, yet most people can’t understand it. This is more than just a lack of knowledge; it’s the result of something more sinister at work. The devil, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe, lest the light of the Gospel of Grace illuminate their minds. This is true for the unsaved, but many born-again Christians are also in the dark about this.

Adam and Eve’s sin blinded mankind’s spiritual eyes to God’s presence. Jesus came as God’s peace offering, and as a way of reconciliation back to God. He also came to bring the recovery of sight to the blind. This means not just to the physically blind, but also to the spiritually blind.

Jesus is found in His Word; the more we study the Word, the more we see Him. The Holy Spirit’s interpretation—not a religious interpretation—teaches us to rightly divide the Word of truth. Unlike the children of Israel, whose minds were blinded by the reading of the Old Testament, we’re free from having to follow long lists of rules that the Law of Moses enforced. Jesus wants us to take a long look at Him, see Him for who He really is, and not to look away.

When Elijah and his servant were surrounded by what seemed like a hopeless situation, Elijah’s spiritual vision allowed him to see what his servant was blind to. He asked God for spiritual vision for the servant, and God obliged. When we ask, He’ll do the same for us.

Prayer:

Lord, a relationship with Your Son opens our spiritual eyes and allows us to see for ourselves Your great compassion and love for us. We’re grateful and thankful for the illumination Your Word of grace brings. In Jesus’ name, amen.
