For the week of October 3, 2022 Giving by the Grace of God

As believers, we’re in a position to receive God’s undeserved favor in all areas of our lives, including our financial lives. Although we’re no longer under the law, failure to understand how grace impacts our finances causes us to continue operating as if we still were. A key difference between the old and new covenants is our mindset toward giving. Under the law, the people gave grudgingly for fear of punishment; under grace, we can give freely and with the proper motives.

Most churches use guilt and condemnation to motivate people to give. They preach a law-based message that tells people that they’re robbing God by not tithing and giving, and thereby they’ll be cursed. By contrast, Paul taught the concept of proportional giving. Under this concept, we give according to how God has prospered us.

Proportional giving in the New Testament focuses on giving with the motivation of helping others. Deciding in our hearts how much to give allows the Holy Spirit to get involved; in this way we give cheerfully, not reluctantly or in response to pressure. God generously provides all we need so that we’ll have everything we need, with plenty left over to share with others.

The concept of grace-based giving reveals that the purpose of having a job is to share with others less fortunate. Paul taught the Ephesians that using their hands for good hard work enabled them to give generously to those in need. Financial giving can be compared to a farmer sowing seeds; whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever gives bountifully will reap bountifully.

Giving positions us to receive the blessings previously made available to us. Whatever we give will be given back to us, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. Jesus is our perfect example of giving. God so loved the world the world that He gave us His only Son; in light of this, we can never outgive God.

Prayer:

God, as Your children, we’ve been equipped to give generously so we can make a difference in others’ lives. Your Word teaches us how to give joyfully and with the right motives. Thank You for this. In Jesus’ name, amen.
