For the week of July 25, 2022 Break the Chains of Fear

We’ve all felt fear at some point. It’s a very familiar emotion. Fear can serve as a useful warning to move us to a safe place when we see impending physical danger. However, letting it govern our lives puts us in bondage to it.

Always being afraid makes us miserable and it isn’t God’s will for us; fear isn’t from Him. God hasn’t given us the spirit of fear. However, as free moral agents, the decision whether or not to be afraid is up to us. God has set before us life and death, a blessing and a curse; He wants us to choose life.

The choices we make are important because they ultimately determine the course of our lives. As God’s children, we don’t have to put up with what others struggle with. When we got born again, Christ freed us from bondage to the spirit of fear that rules the world; by God’s grace, we’ll never be subject to it again. We haven’t received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the spirit of adoption by God; we have every right to call Him “Abba.”

Believers have been given authority over fear; we exercise that authority by verbally confessing the Word when we feel it trying to establish itself. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. The words we speak reflect what we believe in our hearts; the more we declare them, the more strength those affirmations take on. We believe, and therefore we speak.

Fear is all around us and is part of the world we live in, but Christians are empowered to live in the world without being part of it. Although we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we fear no evil because God is with us. Knowing whose we are and who goes with us in life keeps us free from this destructive emotion.

Prayer:

God, thank You for being our heavenly Father and freeing us from living in fear. The knowledge that we belong to You gives us boldness and bravery others don’t have, and we’re grateful for this. In Jesus’ name, amen.
