Taking Charge over Your Emotions

Sept. 19, 2018 | By Creflo Dollar

Summary

Mastering our emotions is critical, because our entire lives are based on whether we control our feelings or they control us. Our feelings and thoughts spring from our souls; therefore, success or failure in life is based on what happens in our souls. When we study the Bible and let the Word renew our minds, we learn a strong sense of self-control, that will help us to master our emotions, and take charge in this area. This enables us to avoid the trap of getting stuck in something that happened in the past, unable to move forward. God’s will for us is to prosper and be successful in every arena of life. When we refuse to let our emotions rule us, He can move us in the direction He wants us to go. Exerting our God-given authority over our emotions, empowers us to succeed the way He wants us to.

  1. The spiritual fight we are in takes place in our minds. This is a fight we can win .
    1. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth(3 John 1:2).
      1. Prosperity in our souls is a renewed mind. Prosperity in our physical bodies is good health.
      2. As go our souls, so go our lives. Where our emotions go is the place where we are taken.
    2. Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well  and prospers (3 John 1:2, AMPC).
      1. Prosperity and being successful in every way is how we truly master life.
      2. God gave us emotions so we could enjoy our lives, not to make them miserable.
    3. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
      1. We will always have random thoughts passing through our minds, but we do not have to tolerate negative thoughts. If we can control our thoughts, we can control our emotions.
      2. Strongholds are houses of thoughts that have been constructed and that reside in our minds.
      3. When we have thoughts contrary to God’s Word, we bring those thoughts into captivity by opening our mouths and speaking His Word. Quoting Scripture disrupts the thoughts because we must shift our concentration from what we are thinking to what we are saying.
  1. True strength is not physical, but it lies in the ability to dominate our thoughts and emotions.
    1. The person who can control their emotions is the strongest person in the world. A truly strong individual has the wisdom to know how to deal with their emotions; this is real power.
      1. He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city (Proverbs 16:32).
      2. He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, he who rules his [own] spirit than he who takes a city (Proverbs 16:32, AMPC).
    2. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15).
      1. Despite all that Jesus went through, He still refused to let His emotions rule Him.
    3. And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be struck with terror  and amazement and deeply troubled  and depressed. And He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sad (overwhelmed with grief) so that it almost kills Me! Remain here and keep awake  and be watching (Mark 14:33, 34, AMPC).
      1. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was under so much stress that He felt depressed and terrified. He refused to yield to these emotions.
      2. He resisted His emotions by moving on a little farther and praying.
      3. For us, this means we must keep going in the direction God wants us to go, no matter how we feel.
      4. Like Jesus, when we are struggling with our emotions, we must pray through the situation.
