Trusting God in All Circumstances

If you’ve ever wondered if you could trust someone with a secret or with something very valuable, you probably remember the nervous feeling of hope mixed with uncertainty as you opened yourself up to that person. Unfortunately, people are always capable of making mistakes and letting us down; placing our faith in another person takes a great deal of courage. Although others can betray that trust, God never will. Relying on Him in all circumstances gives us a peace that we won’t understand but will truly welcome.

In life, there are bound to be situations we can’t handle. We may turn to friends or family, but their flaws and imperfections can keep them from being a reliable source of help; others’ insecurities and fears can cause them to distance themselves from us when we desperately need guidance or advice. When the world turns away from us, however, God does just the opposite. “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22, NIV). We can trust that He’ll never disappear in our darkest times.

In the Old Testament, when Daniel found himself in the lions’ den, he trusted God. When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were cast into in the furnace, they, too, trusted Him. When we find ourselves in a tough spot, we can trust that God will stick by us and turn the situation around. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Trusting God empowers us to do things we never imagined we could accomplish. Focusing on Him, instead of whatever is going on around us at the moment, opens the door to the supernatural. During the storm at sea, when Jesus told Peter to walk on water and come to Him, Peter succeeded as long as he looked only at Jesus. Peter’s faith in Him was the deciding factor (Matthew 14:22-32).

The world teaches self-reliance, but that only goes so far. Things can look hopeless when we try and solve the problem through our own efforts, but we don’t have to despair. When it seems like there’s no way out and we feel like we’re hitting a brick wall, God makes a way when there is no way, if we just let Him. “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27, NIV). We can always rely on Him.

God is waiting for us to trust Him. All we need to do is believe, with no doubts nagging at the edge of our minds.“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5, 6). Our limited intellectual understanding isn’t a requirement of faith. When we’re in a predicament, turning to Him allows Him to show us the solution.

We can place our faith in God; He’s bigger, stronger, and infinitely more powerful than anything else in the universe. His love for us is infinite. Letting Him lead us through life gives us something the world can’t comprehend. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). Knowing He’ll always be by our side gives us confidence and security.
