The Holy Spirit: Our Guide Through Life

Most of us remember the loving guidance and direction we received from our parents. Without it, we would have floated through life like boats drifting along with no anchor. As adults, we still need to be guided and directed to stay on the right path in life. We simply need to know who to go to for wise counsel.

The Holy Spirit is the only one who instructs us perfectly and always tells us the right way to go. However, in these end times, most churches don’t mention Him or teach about Him anymore because they don’t understand Him. The Holy Spirit seems to have been banned from many people’s lives; to them, He’s taboo. However, we miss out on a lot when we ignore Him as if He didn’t exist. “Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19, AMPC).

The Holy Spirit is God, Himself, in spirit form. If we allow Him into our lives, He’ll always be with us to instruct, teach, and guide us. He fills many necessary roles: He’s our comforter, counselor, helper, advocate, intercessor, strengthener, and someone to stand by us (John 14:26, AMPC). The Holy Spirit is a real person who brings to mind everything Jesus taught; we can’t succeed without Him.

One of the things the Holy Spirit does is remind us of who we are in Christ: children of God. The knowledge of who we are in Him acts as a powerful rudder to guide us through life and help us make the right decisions. This was something that was unavailable under the Law of Moses, which kept the people in bondage to the Ten Commandments, plus more than six hundred additional laws. “They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it!” (2 Corinthians 3:17, MSG). We’re now at liberty to be guided by God’s love and mercy instead of by a set of rules and regulations carved in stone or written on parchment.

Life has far too many moving parts for us to be able to see the big picture on our own. We need God to guide us through, from start to finish. When we’re led by the Spirit, instead of our own personal momentary whims, we make the right decisions. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). We’ll never go wrong when we let Him administer God’s wisdom to us.

The Holy Spirit ministers to us in ways the law never could. Because the Spirit, Himself, lives in us after we get born again, we can hear Him speaking to our spirits. When we listen to that still, small voice inside us that gives us hope and encouragement, we’ll always do the right thing. “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5, NKJV). We can live our whole lives with few, if any, regrets; the regrets we would have would be the results of when we heard the Spirit speaking to us but didn’t listen to Him.

Most people struggle through life because they don’t know the Holy Spirit. Our relationship with Him gives us a huge advantage. Taking our cues from Him can only lead to success.
