Single, but Never Alone

Christian singles have a powerful anointing. God uses them to reach the lost in ways that married couples may not be able to do. We should never short-change ourselves just because of our marital status. The world puts great value on being able to say: “we’re in a relationship”, but even if we’re not, our relationship with Christ gives us all we’ll ever need.

Being single can present its own unique challenges. We may detect the unspoken message that it’s better to be married, or that we need another person to complete us. God is the most important partner we can ever have; a relationship with Him makes us much stronger than if we were alone. “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10). When we stumble on our Christian walk, God is always by our side to pick us up and set us back on our feet.

It’s not good to be alone in life; however, being “alone” is different than being single. We can still be unique, whole, and have purpose in our lives as single Christians. Singleness needs to achieve wholeness before connecting with anyone in marriage. God can, and does, work through those with a willing heart, regardless of whether or not they’re married. “For there is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:11, NKJV).

Being single can actually give us an advantage, as we are enabled to focus on God’s mission for us, without becoming distracted. Husbands and wives can sometimes get bogged down in family matters and lose the urgency of purpose needed to spread the gospel to others.

I want you to be free from the concerns of this life. An unmarried man can spend his time doing the Lord’s work and thinking how to please him. But a married man has to think about his earthly responsibilities and how to please his wife. His interests are divided. In the same way, a woman who is no longer married or has never been married can be devoted to the Lord and holy in body and in spirit. But a married woman has to think about her earthly responsibilities and how to please her husband. I am saying this for your benefit, not to place restrictions on you. I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible (1 Corinthians 7:32-35, NLT).

Not having a spouse doesn’t hinder us at all.

The example we set by our godly lifestyle is important, because others are watching us, whether we know it or not. When we use the Word of God as our guide in everything we say and do, we can provide encouragement to others just when they need it the most. Many people pay more attention to what we do than what we say; therefore, we can lead others to Christ without saying a word. “Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world” (1 Peter 2:12, NLT).

There’s no need to feel that we’re ill-equipped to serve because we’re single. God has given all of us gifts we can use to share His love with others. With Him, we’re never alone in the mission field.
