Safe and Secure

Safety and security are basic needs we have as human beings. Most of us spend considerable time and money ensuring we’re protected from danger but are afraid to consider what we’d do if all our efforts to stay safe failed. We do our best to guard our perimeters, but everyone has their limitations. Being vulnerable and at risk is too frightening for many of us to contemplate; thankfully, depending on God for our protection guarantees our safety.

There’s nothing wrong with taking steps to keep ourselves and our families safe from harm. However, we don’t have to become obsessed with it. This kind of thinking indicates a lack of trust in God, who promises us safety when we rely on Him. You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety(Job 11:18, NIV). Trying to ensure our own security apart from God can leave us restless and block us from the peace of mind found in Him.

The world is accustomed to living fearfully; as believers, we don’t have to tolerate that. Trusting God to keep us safe from evil allows us to enjoy the true security that brings peace of mind and rest from worry. “But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor evil occurrence” (1 Kings 5:4, NKJV). When others feel they have to “sleep with one eye open,” we’re free from that curse. This is a blessing from God.

Most people aren’t aware of the origin of the bad they see in the natural realm; they don’t know who the real culprit is. The author of destruction—our real adversary—is loose in the world, and intent on causing panic and spreading fear. When we’re in Christ, however, the devil is defenseless against us. “Yet the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen [you] and set you on a firm foundation and guard you from the evil [one]” (2 Thessalonians 3:3, AMPC).

Life can be scary without some kind of assurance that everything will be fine. Going it alone opens us up to whatever comes our way. Faith in God’s assurance of our safety aligns us with His all-encompassing protection. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber… The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore(Psalm 121:2, 3, 7, 8). We don’t have to be moved by what we see or hear around us when we believe this.

We’d be foolish to deny the possibility of trouble befalling us, or think that we can get out of it through our own wits or cleverness. The world tells us to be self-reliant and work our way out of it, but sometimes we’re in so deep there’s no way out. In all of these situations, God makes a way where there is no way. “The Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him [who revere and worship Him with awe] and each of them He delivers” (Psalm 34:7, AMPC). Deliverance is one of His specialties.

When we have faith in God for our safety, we don’t have to fear the future. We have peace of mind knowing that whatever happens around us, He’s got our backs. That’s a promise that no one else can match.
