Power Over the Evil One

Today’s world is accustomed to a steady diet of evil. The negative messages we receive come in from all directions; if we’re not careful to vigilantly monitor what we see and hear, we can become fearful. However, it’s a misconception to think that we’re helpless against bad things. Studying God’s Word reveals that He not only protects us, He has also proactively given us authority over every evil thing.

God loves us, and He didn’t create us to be victims. One of His promises is that the evil that has the power to stop others has no effect on those who trust in Him. If we’re in that second group that trusts Him, we have power over evil. “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19). Believing this promise keeps us from walking in fear.

The devil has made us his enemy, but Jesus Christ has rendered him powerless. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we can have confidence in the supernatural protection He provides. Whatever or whoever the enemy sends our way will never have victory over us. “Little children, you are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4, AMPC). This is great news—regardless of what’s happening, God’s on our side.

In these end days, it’s getting rough simply turning on the TV. The news media constantly reports on crime, diseases, and scary things. If we didn’t have Jesus, it would be unnerving looking around and seeing what the enemy is doing, but we don’t have to be afraid. “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling” (Psalm 91:5-10). Our protection is real.

Being born again makes us God’s children, eligible for certain rights and privileges the world doesn’t have. One of the abilities we receive from Him is the capacity to crush and defeat any evil plans others may form against us. “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD” (Isaiah 54:17). No matter what kind of attack against a believer the devil devises, it will fail. Any condemnation or accusations flung at us can’t stand against God’s promises.

The world depicts Christians as weak and ineffectual; this is the wrong perception. Relying on God’s strength instead of our own gives us the upper hand. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21, NKJV). This is a command from God, Himself. Believers have the ability to do this powerfully and forcefully, yet with love.
