We live in a world of broken promises. It has become commonplace to hear someone make a promise they either can’t keep or have no intention of honoring. The ability and willingness to follow through on what we say indicates our character and ethics, and signals whether others can trust and believe us. This is why the promises found in God’s Word are so trustworthy and rock-solid concerning the believer.
God is intentional in everything He says and does; nothing happens by accident when He gets involved. Similar to heirs hearing the reading of a will and discovering what they have inherited, God’s Word reveals that we have inherited something far greater than what the world offers, and something that can’t be stolen: life in heaven. “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life” (1 John 2:25).
Most people have become so jaded by what they see around them that they have trouble believing anything that comes from the Bible; they’re too accustomed to the world’s lies. Unlike humans, however, God never lies; He’s incapable of it because that’s not His nature. “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” (Numbers 23:19, NLT). We don’t have to be afraid to put all our trust in God’s Word because He’ll always come through on what He says.
In the Old Testament, God made many promises to His people, and faithfully kept all of them. The most notable one was the announcement He made through an angel to Mary, just before Jesus’ birth. “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:21-23). Jesus was the promise; we inherit this promise by accepting Him as our Lord and Savior and developing a relationship with Him.
Getting born again makes us children of God and brothers and sisters to Christ; we inherit the same blessings as Jesus. This includes not just victory over adversity in life but over physical, tangible things as well. Believing God’s Word—and following up our belief with actions that reflect our faith—positions us to receive supernatural protection, abundance, increase, and prosperity on every level. “…Because as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).
God promises to unconditionally accept and love us forever, despite our imperfections and flaws. In a culture where others’ acceptance is based on our performance, this is unheard of. Faith in His love for us encourages us and gives us strength to go on when trouble hits. “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).
God will never leave us on our own, no matter what. This comforts us when others let us down. We can completely rely on this.
