Going through Life Spiritually Blind

Life can be seen as a rich and exciting adventure, but where we’re headed on the journey depends on our spiritual sight. Having vision in the physical realm is what many people associate with the word “sight,” but spiritual vision is on a completely different level. Most people drift along not even aware that they’re spiritually blind, which is a tragedy.

Spiritual blindness is a lack of understanding what Jesus made available to all of us by faith. We will never have that kind of knowledge until we get born again, but even born-again Christians can remain blind without constantly studying and meditating on the Word of God. Jesus is the only One who can open our blind eyes, and through His grace He gives us spiritual insight. “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he” (Proverbs 29:18). Insight from God gives us the spiritual discernment and wisdom to realize that there is no way we can always make the right call in every situation on our own; we need guidance from the Holy Spirit to do that.

The world doesn’t know God, and therefore has no such discernment to make wise decisions. The level of a person’s spiritual knowledge determines how they respond to situations, and most people respond according to the way they feel at the moment rather than by faith. Failing to believe in the power of what Jesus did through His death and resurrection keeps us spiritually blind. “If the Good News we preach is hidden behind a veil, it is hidden only from people who are perishing. Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God” (2 Corinthians 4:3, 4, NLT).

In order to receive the spiritual vision we need, we must move away from performance-based religious doctrines. The majority of churches teach the “do good, get good” philosophy which was true under the Law of Moses, but which is now expired. The Gospel of Grace is something most preachers don’t teach because they don’t understand it themselves, and spiritually blind leaders teaching the Law lead their congregations in the wrong direction (Matthew 15:14; Luke 6:39).

Spiritual insight from God keeps us from blundering along making bad decisions that aren’t in our best interest. God knows better than we do what is in our best interest, but sometimes our own pride gets in the way of asking Him for help. When we insist on choosing our own path in life, we can end up in a place we don’t want to be. “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12, NIV).

Jesus opens the eyes of our spiritual understanding, removes the veil of ignorance from our minds, and allows us to see things invisible on the physical level. Submitting ourselves to the prompting from His Spirit gives us the same spiritual sight that the prophet Elisha had, when he saw things invisible to his servant (2 Kings 6:14-17). Seeing Jesus for who He is, instead of who the world says He is, takes life to a whole new level.
