God's Favor Directed Toward Us

If you’ve ever made a mistake you sorely regretted, you’re familiar with the self-condemnation that may have resulted. We’ve all made bad choices at one time or another, and felt guilty about it later. We don’t have to beat ourselves up about it, however; we can forgive ourselves and move on. We’ve been empowered to do this because of the grace God has for us.

God loves us no matter what we do. We don’t have to go through life always afraid of making mistakes, because He’ll never turn His back on us for our bad choices. “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:6, 7). This frees us from feeling like we always have to be mindful of the possibility of doing something sinful, and allows us to focus on Him. This knowledge gives us tremendous peace of mind.

Through His grace, God gave us life to live abundantly and enjoy it. Putting ourselves back under the Law of Moses by failing to accept God’s grace takes all the joy out of life. “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). This is not God’s will for us. He wants us to have a thorough knowledge of grace, not sin.

The message we get from the world is that we must remember our past sins and mistakes, and drag them through life with us. As believers, we don’t have to do that. We can completely forget them because God, Himself, has chosen to forget them. “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Hebrews 10:17). Letting go of the past allows us to move forward and embrace the future God has planned for us.

Remembering that God has already forgiven us allows us to extend the same forgiveness toward others when they make mistakes. Doing this prevents bad feelings from blocking the grace God wants to give us. Forgiving others is important, but we can only do this if we forgive ourselves, first. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31, 32).

Grace and forgiveness go hand-in-hand. When we’ve wronged someone else, or they did us wrong, forgiving them is an act of grace that clearly shows God’s mercy. It’s not always easy, but trusting in the favor He has for us gives us the strength to do this.

Most people don’t understand grace, yet everyone desperately needs it. We have received it in abundance and are in a position to share it with others. Grace allows us to go through life boldly and confidently, without having to shrink back fearfully or timidly. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). God’s grace is the antidote for the damage that living in this punishing, merciless world inflicts.
