Godly Money Management

Money is something we all need, yet few understand its spiritual nature. Most people think that wealth and a Christian lifestyle are the opposite of each other, but that’s not true. God’s will for His people includes prosperity and financial success, as long as we don’t make our finances our god. Contrary to what religion says, it’s okay for the believer to be rich.

God has a lot to say about money in His Word; the Bible mentions it more than one-hundred times. We may have grown up thinking that Christians are supposed to be poor, but that’s wrong-thinking. Money is simply a tool to help others; managing it wisely and making smart financial decisions allows God to bless and multiply it. The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it(Proverbs 10:22, NLT).

There’s a right way and a wrong way to handle money; the right way doesn’t necessarily come from worldly experts. The number one way to increase our money is to give generously. “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” (Luke 6:38, NLT).  Financial giving motivated by love, for the purpose of helping others, is sowing a seed. God promises a great harvest of blessings will come into our lives when we believe this so strongly that we give automatically with no hesitation.

This isn’t something the world practices, so it’s up to us as Christians which financial management practices we want to follow. We don’t have to be afraid to give because God will always make sure that those who trust in Him will never lack for anything. “…Yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread(Psalm 37:25, NIV). Unlike the world’s view, we need to see giving as a gain and not a loss.

God sees money differently than most people do. Although there’s nothing wrong with believers having it, He cautions us against the greed and avarice it can trigger. Greedy people try to get rich quick but don’t realize they’re headed for poverty…Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed(Proverbs 28:22, 27, NLT). Money is unreliable; we bring about our own negative consequences by hoarding it instead of using it to bless others.

We all have special gifts and talents that have been placed inside of us; recognizing these talents and using them to serve others pleases God. When we do this, God multiplies what we have in the natural; the opposite is also true when we’re stingy and refuse to do so. Jesus taught this during His earthly ministry (Matthew 25:14-30).

Practical things like saving and investing, making a budget, living below your income level, paying bills on time, and avoiding debt are all good practices to follow. Doing them in faith and asking God to bless everything we do allows Him access to our finances. Good intentions are fine, but they’re only a start; success comes with God’s involvement. Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed(Proverbs 16:3, NLT).

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Christians enjoying prosperity and financial gain. This is God’s will for us. As long as we remember who is ultimately responsible for all blessings—including those in our finances—we can prosper in every area of our lives.
