From Servants to Children

Being someone’s child can carry with it definite privileges and advantages. We’ve most likely seen old TV westerns depicting the difference in how hired hands were treated versus the ranch owner’s children. Being a servant means a person has to work to earn what they receive; by comparison, being a son or daughter entitles one to receive good things whether they deserve them or not. This is how God’s grace works when we get born again.

Choosing to accept Jesus Christ immediately changes our family tree. We’re welcomed into God’s family, we become His children, and heaven is our final destination. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12, NKJV). This gives us every right to stand before God and enjoy His presence without having to earn it. Not everyone can say that.
We’re all made in God’s image and He loves everyone, because He is love; however, the decision whether or not we’re actually His children is up to us. Having Him for our heavenly Father isn’t like when infants are born and have no choice as to whose they are. There’s no gray area here—we either decide to be God’s children, or we don’t. “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26). Faith is the deciding factor here.

A common denominator with everyone is that we all face problems from time to time. The difference between God’s children and everyone else is that we have divine help and deliverance; all others have to struggle along as best they can. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Trusting Jesus enough to make Him our Lord and Savior gives us access to God’s help even when we don’t deserve it.

The world is enslaved to whatever appeals to the physical senses. Whether they’re negative thinking, bad habits, addictions, or depraved lifestyles, those taskmasters keep people from reaching their true potential. On our own, we could never break free from this type of bondage because self-effort apart from God’s intervention never succeeds. Becoming a child of God not only enables us to break free but also positions us to inherit all the good things in life He has made available to His sons and daughters. “So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir” (Galatians 4:7, NIV).

Just like earthly children are attuned to the sound of their parents’ voices, we as God’s children hear His voice. One of the advantages we have is a supernatural ability, given to us by God, to hear Hm speaking to us. This guidance is administered by the Holy Spirit, who keeps us moving in the right direction in life. “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left” (Isaiah 30:21). Listening and obeying helps us steer clear of the pitfalls and dangers so many others fall into.

When we think about it, it’s a no-brainer. We can either struggle along and put up with a subpar servant’s existence, or dominate life like true children of God. The choice is ours.
