A Relationship with Grace

Human beings were created to be in relationships. Research has shown that we’re all happier and healthier when we have significant others in our lives to prevent us from being alone and isolated. With that in mind, there’s one relationship above all others that we need in order to be whole. God wants to be part of our everyday lives; to be in His presence is to be in a relationship with Grace, Himself.

Grace isn’t a concept, a program, or an idea. Grace is a real person, and His name is Jesus. God made each of us with an empty space in our hearts that only Jesus can fill. Letting Him into our lives makes a huge difference. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).

The world doesn’t know God; a relationship with Him is a foreign concept. In this respect, believers have an advantage over people who are strangers to Him. Walking with God strengthens us and enables us to do things others can’t. “…But the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits” (Daniel 11:32).

God is a gentleman, and He’ll never force the issue with people who don’t want to get to know Him. However, welcoming Him into our lives gives Him great joy. He wants to be involved in every aspect of what we do. When He’s in our midst, we’ll know it beyond a shadow of a doubt. “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).

No one—except Jesus—is perfect. With any other friendship, human limitations always have the potential to end the relationship; this isn’t an issue at all with God. “Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family” (Proverbs 18:24, MSG). When we cultivate a relationship with God, we learn how faithful He is. Nothing we could ever do could be bad enough to run Him off.

Sometimes people try our patience; at other times, we can find ourselves in a discouraging situation that seems hopeless. When we’re at our worst, we need to keep company with someone who encourages us and gives us hope to keep going. A relationship with that person refreshes us when we’re tired and brings us peace in the middle of the struggle. “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11:28-30, MSG).

Godly relationships are a blessing; a relationship with Grace is doubly so. Making a friendship with Him our top priority has its rewards. “May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace” (Numbers 6:24-26, NLT). Keeping company with God gives us peace that can’t be taken away.
