For the week of July 23, 2018 Put Christ in the Center

We live in a self-centered culture, and if we’re not careful, we can be influenced to think like the rest of the world. We all have a “self” that we have to deal with every day. Letting our pride and sense of self-importance dominate our lives, and thinking we’re our own source for everything, keeps us from experiencing God’s grace. We can’t do anything on our own, but we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.

Self-centeredness is rooted in pride, and pride ushers in anger, bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness. Proud people always seem to be angry at some perceived insult, and they’re easily offended. Contention only comes through pride, but wisdom resides with the well-advised.

We overcome pride and self-centeredness by focusing on Christ, and putting Him in the center instead of us. We look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who went to the cross to enable us to defeat these emotions. We show true wisdom when we shift our focus from what we can do for ourselves to what Jesus has already done for us.

Every emotional hurt or pain, and all grief and bitterness, is the result of our own self-centeredness. Conversely, we won’t get hurt if we keep ourselves out of the center. We find our peace and joy in God’s grace. We fall from grace when we let self-centeredness take over and see only ourselves instead of Jesus.

Jesus is the supreme example of selflessness. Even when He was dying on the cross, He refused to be self-centered, although He had every reason to be. He thought of others first and asked God to forgive the ones who crucified Him. Following His example may not always be easy, but it keeps us right where we need to be.

Prayer:

God, self-centeredness is deadly to our peace. You give us the wisdom to recognize when we’re walking in selfishness, and the ability to stay out of it. Thank You for what You’ve done. In Jesus’ name, amen.
