For the week of June 7, 2021 From Punishment to Blessing

Most people equate God with punishment. This is because religion has taught us an Old-Testament mindset that was true under the Law of Moses, but is no longer true under grace. Under the law, the children of Israel had a reason to fear God because they would be punished for failing to keep every commandment and statute. However, God is no longer angry with us and we need not fear His wrath; He wants to bless us, not punish us.

In the Old Testament the fear of punishment determined the people’s actions. Any infraction, however minor, had serious consequences. When God made His presence known, it was to come out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The sins of the fathers brought punishment to the children, to the third and fourth generations.

Jesus’ death and resurrection changed all that; although the law came by Moses, grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Because of His finished works, God’s wrath has been replaced by His favor. We can be thankful that the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.

To get the full benefits of God’s blessings, we must renew our minds so that we can experience His perfect will for us. He wants to bless us and make us rich in every aspect of our lives, without adding any sorrow to it. Believing this positions us to receive the good things He wants us to have.

Because of the finished works of Jesus and our acceptance of Him, we’ve been blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. We’ve already received God’s approval; He has become our loving heavenly Father and we are now His beloved children. We can now joyfully anticipate abundant blessings with no more curses. As His sons and daughters who confidently rely on Him, we can expect no less than His best.

Prayer:

Father God, before Your Son came, mankind lived in fear of punishment and curses. Because of His love for us, Christ replaced all the bad things with good things so that we could receive generous and constant blessings. We’re thankful and grateful for this. In Jesus’ name, amen.
