The Unchanging God of Forever

You may have heard the saying, “The only constant in life is change;” while change is good in some cases, it can also be unsettling. For some people, change can mean disrupting the comfortable, familiar world to which they’ve become accustomed. It can be stressful and fearful for some because it means that uncharted territory lies ahead. When we need stability and consistency when everything around us is changing, we can rely on the one who never changes.

We live in an on-again, off-again world where things that were once considered right are now said to be wrong, and what was wrong is now considered acceptable. If we went along with worldly standards, we would be unstable and constantly at risk of being swept away by the latest fads and philosophies; but we can anchor ourselves in God with the firm knowledge that what is right and proper according to His standards will stay that way. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines” (Hebrews 13:8, 9, NKJV).

When we look around, the only constant we see in the world is unrest, fear, and confusion. This is fueled by the changes that continue to sweep over us every few years. Those without a solid grounding in Christ don’t know what to think and can be overwhelmed by it all. Basing our value system in Christ makes us unshakeable (Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49).

Without the unchanging Word of God to comfort and guide us, what goes on around us could destroy our peace of mind. It can be very tempting to take our eyes off Him and refocus them on something else, but anything other than God is unreliable and could collapse when we need it the most. When we need to re-stabilize our thoughts to rebalance our lives, He’s always waiting for us. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

We may not have any control over the changes that come our way, but we don’t have to fear them. The great thing about God’s love is that it strengthens us to deal with whatever life throws our way. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18, NIV). Leaning on Him, instead of ourselves or others, helps us cope with the unexpected.

When we rely solely on what others tell us, unforeseen circumstances can pop up. People can make promises to us with good intentions, but their fears or limitations may prevent them from keeping those promises. When someone gives us information, we can only hope they’re being truthful with us, but we can always count on God’s promises, because they never change. “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).

We have no guarantee that everything we know won’t be completely rearranged tomorrow. Even if it is and we don’t know what to do, we can call on God for help. “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2). In times of change, we find our footing in Christ.
