Nothing Missing, Nothing Broken

Most people think of healing from a physical standpoint, in terms of the body or the brain recovering from an injury. That’s certainly true, but there are other aspects of healing as well. We can suffer when something we value highly is broken or taken away from us. Our enemy, the devil, delights in stealing from us; some of the things he tries to shatter and take away include our peace of mind and our sense of stability and security that comes from being in Christ.

Studying and meditating on the Word of God is an effective weapon against his efforts. The devil uses every situation he can to highlight the negative aspects of things that happen in our lives in hopes of crumbling our trust in Jesus. Satan is a liar and a thief, but when this thief tries to steal our confidence in who we are in Christ, we’re empowered to stop him. “People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving. Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; he may have to give up all the substance of his house” (Proverbs 6:30, 31, NKJV).

This authority is one of the results of the finished works of Jesus, who is the God of restoration. When Satan stole the glory from Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, God refused to let evil get the upper hand. When Christ came and restored the balance of power back to our Father’s original plan, He also restored everything that the enemy stole or destroyed. “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you” (Joel 2:25). We claim this restoration by faith.

During His ministry, Jesus healed people who had faith in Him, and He restored them to perfect wholeness. This wholeness was not just in their physical bodies, but in their spirits and souls, as well. An encounter with Christ will do that. It happened with the woman who asked Jesus to heal her daughter (Matthew 15:28), the woman who was healed of a bleeding disorder (Mark 5:34), and the boy from whom Jesus cast out demons before returning to his father (Luke 9:42, AMPC).

The restoration between the boy and his father parallels the restoration of our relationship with our heavenly Father through Jesus. In the garden of Eden, the connection Adam and Eve had with God was severed. In the Old Testament, we see a foreshadowing of when Jesus would restore everything that was missing or broken. “And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all” (1 Samuel 30:19, NKJV).

The world is accustomed to doing without but, as Christians, we don’t have to live that way. The word “shalom” not only means peace, but also complete, intact, and in good health. Jesus has lifted the curse of chaos, sickness, lack, insufficiency, and powerlessness; in Him, we have peace, healing, wholeness, and the same authority to restore order in our lives that He has. For true healing and restoration on every level, Christ is our shalom.
